3rd Annual XML for Market Data:
XML for Market Data: The Search for Efficiency
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is prevalent in every industry - and increasingly so within the market data industry. The natural progression of XML adoption is fraught with uncertainties and concerns about the viability of XML and the migration path from current business practices to new, more flexible ideologies.
XML for Market Data will assert the need for organizational efficiency in migrating from existing systems AND the need for processing efficiency with the new XML-encoded market data content. XML for Market Data will investigate practical guidelines for XML adoption while being sensitive to human and technology resources.

Keynote:
Moving an Enterprise to Data Centric Processing
The tasks of migrating an enterprise to new technologies are often daunting -
but none so much as the business case for senior management - to elicit their
support. A core foundation of any successful business or technology adaptation
requires an encompassing enterprise-wide approach. Listen to one market data
user firm describe their strategy for achieving a new efficient model for
developing and managing their systems while providing applications with required
access to data.

Markets & Investment Banking, Merrill Lynch
10:10-11:10 Insider’s Road Map to Success
Presenters will discuss real-world based projects involving
migrating to XML encoding and processing with varied degress of stress and
success.

11:30-12:40 Panel Discussion: Which XML Anyway?
The attraction of XML is that it is easy to understand and it can be used to encode any data - just the way you want it done. However, this presents an interoperability problem and spurs the creation of potentially related specifications by independent groups or individuals. This panel will clarify the uses of the various market data related XML specifications and their relationship to one another - and will outline the plan for bringing them together under one common standard.

14:00-15:15 Technical Focus: Must I Process All That XML?
While XML is an easy choice for market data encoding because of its “self-describing” nature, all of that text makes for a very large processing headache. Further, the plethora of XML derived specifications makes for a confusing infrastructure. How does one design for effectiveness while allowing for the changing landscape of specifications?

15:30 -16:00 Business Focus: Mapping to
XML
Existing infrastructure and business models are core to an organization’s lifeline - the need to use XML often comes as an afterthought or follow-on to an entrenched system. This session discusses the steps in migrating from a legacy system to one based on an XML specification. Details include not only the transformation of the market data into MDDL (or any XML) but also the segregation of the data modeling from the technology infrastructure.
Martin Sexton, Director Information Technology, London Market Systems
