6th World Financial Information Conference - Fairmont Hotel, Washington, DC USA - October 14-16, 2003
Program Overview

6th World Financial Information Conference
Product and Business Strategies for the New Market Data Industry

The only global meeting dedicated exclusively to the business of market data

October 14-16, 2003
Fairmont Hotel, Washington, DC

The FISD's World Financial Information Conference (WFIC) is the meeting ground for the global market data industry. Held every other year, the WFIC brings together senior management from every segment of the industry - exchanges, market centers, market data vendors, news organizations, specialist data providers, enabling technology companies, investment managers, broker/dealers, custodian banks -- to focus on the core strategic, technical and commercial issues associated with the worldwide flow of financial information.

FISD has designed a provocative program on the critical trends shaping the new market data industry. Sessions will emphasize the regulatory, technological, competitive and operational drivers of the business transformation currently underway within the market data industry - and project what they will mean for the economics of our business, the definition of business roles and the product strategies of affected organizations.

The WFIC program will not just tell you what you already know by simply describing the issues that are confronting our industry. Instead, we will use the current issues as a starting point to project how the next phase of our business (and the functions of the players) will evolve and what companies will be forced to deal with as a result.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Don Weeden, Managing Director, Weeden & Co., L.L.P.

Defining the Landscape of the New Market Data Industry
In this session, FISD will ask three of the industry's leading research firms to survey the various industry segments to conduct original research to both define the core issues that are driving the future of the financial information industry and analyze how they will affect future business strategy and the overall competitive landscape of the market data industry.
  • Moderator: Mike Atkin, VP, FISD/SIIA
  • Adrian Goulbourn, Publisher, Risk Waters Group
  • Herbert Skeete, Head, Exchange Strategy, Reuters
  • Larry Tabb, Founder & CEO, The Tabb Group

Market Data Vendors Speak Out

Implications of the New Investment Services Directive
A few weeks ago, the European Parliament approved the basic principles of the new Investment Services Directive (ISD). This is perhaps the biggest change in the European market data industry since the advent of electronic trading – and will increase the price reporting responsibilities of every EU investment firm and ECN. The luncheon presentation will describe the implications of the new ISD and its impact on exchanges, data vendors and investment firms.

  • Chris Pickles, Manager, Industry Relations, Radianz
  • Wendy Morgan, Head of Information Products, London Stock Exchange
  • Frank Desmond, Head of Content Acquisition Europe, Reuters

Market Data Industry Turmoil: Old Ideas Meet New Realities
This panel discussion will examine how the information requirements for the financial industry are changing and what participants are doing (or need to do) to accommodate. The panel members will explore whether the industry is simply in a "bad patch" or whether the business models are permanently broken - and address such questions as:
  • Would value increase if existing full-service vendors were broken up?
  • Exchanges are re-entering businesses they once abandoned. Are successful new strategies possible, or is there institutional amnesia?
  • Exchanges are becoming vendors; brokers are becoming markets (ECNs) and vendors are buying exchanges. Is there a strategy or is it: "Any port but mine in a storm?"
  • Can the old model be fixed, or should it be tossed?
Moderator: Ralph Williams, President, Tee Williams Associates
  • Ron Jordan, VP Market Data, NYSE
  • Christoph Lammerdorf, Managing Director of Information Services, Deutsche Börse AG
  • Paul Pluschkell, Chief Operating Officer, Hyperfeed
  • Roberto Rivero, Head of Sales & Marketing, Information Services, London Stock Exchange

Regulation in the New Market Data Industry - What Does it Mean?
Regulation is likely to have a big impact on the market data business - both from a market structure/data services and a market compliance/risk management perspective. This session will feature key regulatory participants from around the world debating the direction of market regulation as well as its strategic implications to the operations of the financial information industry.

  • Robert Colby, Division of Market Regulation, SEC
  • Rich Bernard, General Counsel, NYSE

XML Transmission Compaction - The Quest for Streaming Updates
The use of XML for market data is now a reality. In this demonstration real market data, both reference and real time streaming, are combined and displayed in a "typical" market data application. The demonstration showcases the MDDL standards in a "reference" market data system utilizing FISD's XTC (Xml Transmission Compaction) Toolkit.
  • James Hartley, Chief Technologist, FISD

What Customers Really Want (and aren't getting)
This session will feature top customers (representing a broad cross-section of markets) defining the information content, applications and services they want but are unable to get in order to conduct their business in the future. The users will create a series of products definitions that they would buy if only they could get a vendor to listen. Think of it as a reverse trade show.

  • Dave Van Hecke, Systems Adminstrator, Market Data Feeds, Strong Capital Management
  • Trip Wadleigh, Manager, Market Data Services
